Latest Changes to the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) – April 2025 🧳

New reforms continue their rollout throughout 2025 in four stages, aiming to address skilled labour gaps, simplify requirements, and support both employers and migrant workers

Interim Visa Work Rights (effective 8 April 2025)

Applicants transitioning from a work visa (or student visa with term‑time work) to a new AEWV will now receive an interim visa granting full work rights while their application is processed.  Latest Changes to the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) – April 2025  Time spent under this interim visa counts toward both relevant work‑experience requirements and the maximum AEWV duration

Removal of Median Wage Threshold (from March–April 2025)

The previously mandatory “median wage” floor has been scrapped. Instead, employers must ensure wages comply with the applicable NZ minimum wage and match the market rate for the specific occupation

  1. Lowered Experience Requirement & Visa Durations

Work experience expectations have dropped from three to two years, widening the talent pool

  1. Employer Advertising & Job‑Check Streamlining

For lower‑skill roles (ANZSCO 4–5), the prior 21‑day advertising requirement through Work & Income is replaced by a ‘good‑faith’ declaration. INZ is also redesigning the Job Check process for low‑risk employers to improve turnaround times

  1. Increased Income Threshold for Dependents

AEWV holders must now earn at least to sponsor dependent children, a substantial rise from the previous

These changes reflect a clear shift toward flexibility, efficiency, and economic alignment. Migrant workers can look forward to smoother transitions, less red tape, and the ability to make seamless job moves, while employers benefit from streamlined hiring and cost‑effective wage structures.
